Recipient of the Friends of the Zurich James Joyce Foundation Scholarship in 2024

My summer at the Zurich James Joyce Foundation in 2024 was not only an exceedingly productive research excursion for me near the final stages of my PhD; it was also a capstone for my decade-long enthusiasm for Joyce’s writing.

From the very beginning of the generously funded fellowship, I found that I had unfettered access to the Foundation’s small fortune of almost every major critical work on Joyce, adaptations and other creative work inspired by Joyce, and unpublished archival materials not accessible in any other repository. The initial plan was to put my head down and use the Foundation’s resources to finish one of my dissertation chapters. However, because I was surrounded by these materials and guided through them by supportive curators, I also began work on an entirely different and unplanned project alongside my primary work, resulting in an article I could not have written elsewhere.

Given the Foundation’s presence in the heart of Zurich, the city and its environs became integral parts of the fellowship experience. I was encouraged to participate in the Foundation’s various events, including reading groups, workshops, and field trips across the Zürichsee. Meeting the trustees and local community members introduced me to the many diverse shades of Joyceans outside of my own academic circles. Both my research and my understanding of Joyce’s world are all the better for it.
