2026 Workshop: Architecture and City Planning

The 2026 Zurich James Joyce Workshop takes place from August 3 to 7, 2026.

From the role that the pantry plays in “The Dead” to the description of Stephen Dedalus’s school environment or the recurring focus on trains and tramlines in Ulysses, architecture and city planning feature prominently in Joyce’s works.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Urban infrastructure: bridges, ports, streets, sewage systems, etc.
  • Types of building: stores, apartment buildings, hotels, etc.
  • Public spaces: pubs, parks, plazas, etc.
  • Institutional spaces: schools, museums, libraries, churches, etc.
  • Architectural features: windows, doors, staircases, etc.
  • Techniques for representing/narrating urban space
  • Joycean cities: Dublin, Pula, Trieste, Rome, Zurich, Paris
