4. Calypso, by Aidan Hickey

Part of Aidan Hickey’s Ulysses series, which was exhibited in Zurich, at the UB Law, as part of the exhibit “James Joyce, Ulysses, and the Law” (April 15 to May 18, 2025).

“This episode introduces the Blooms, in their apartment at No 7 Eccles Street.

Calypso, a nymph, detained Odysseus on her island for seven years. Molly has detained Leopold for over a decade, although they are no longer lovers. Having purchased kidneys for his own breakfast, Leopold returns to bring tea and buttered bread to Molly.

My initial idea for this episode focused on Walter Sickert’s Camden Town interiors. But Sickert’s brilliant “seediness” does not reflect the innate optimism of the Blooms. According to Joyce’s notes, the ‘values’ of Calypso are ‘food, flesh and sunlight’. Few painters have handled these subjects better than Pierre Bonnard.”
