5. Lotus Eaters, by Aidan Hickey

Part of Aidan Hickey’s Ulysses series, which was exhibited in Zurich, at the UB Law, as part of the exhibit “James Joyce, Ulysses, and the Law” (April 15 to May 18, 2025).

Calypso displayed Leopold’s domestic life. Lotus Eaters exposes his secret fantasies. On his way to join colleagues at Dignam’s funeral, Leopold meanders through Westland Row, visiting both St. Andrew’s Church and a Turkish Bath.

In Sweny’s Chemist shop he buys lemon soap for Molly. At the Post Office he collects a letter from an amorous lady-friend he has never met. His “stream of consciousness” teems with illogical juxtapositions, worthy of Magritte or di Chirico.

Lotus Eaters also makes references to Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du mal. The episode’s hallucinogenic mood prefigures the Night-town scenes in Circe.”
