On the first floor of this building, Joyce wrote five episodes of Ulysses: Proteus, Calypso, Lotuseaters, Hades, Aeolus and Lestrygonians. This is also where he lived when met Frank Budgen, an English self-made man and painter who later wrote James Joyce and the Making of Ulysses.
There is a commemorative plaque on the building.
