30 Jan – 12 Oct 1917

Seefeldstrasse 73, third floor

The Joyces shared a five-room flat with Philipp Jarnach, a musician and composer, and they lived in two large rooms facing the street. Jarnach soon felt disturbed by Joyce’s “extrordinarily powerful but rough tenor voice” and the accompaniment on an untuned piano. When he could no longer bear it, Jarnach knocked on Joyce’s door and asked for an agreement to limit Joyce’s singing hours. Joyce must have been quite reasonable as the two soon became friends.

From this address, the Joyces moved to Locarno, where they stayed until they moved back to Zurich in January 1918.
