Im Sommer 1904 lernte er seine Partnerin Nora Barnacle kennen. Noch im Herbst desselben Jahres entschied sich das junge Paar, Irland zu verlassen. James war \u00fcberzeugt, dass die koloniale und konservativ-katholische Stadt Dublin f\u00fcr ihn als angehenden K\u00fcnstler geistig und politisch zu eng war. Joyce kehrte zwar noch f\u00fcr einige kurze Aufenthalte nach Irland zur\u00fcck \u2013 der letzte von diesen fand im Jahr 1912 statt \u2013, doch weder er noch Nora liessen sich je wieder dort nieder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nora and James&#8217;s life in exile brought them to such different places as Pula (Croatia), Trieste (Austria Hungary, later Italy), Rome, Paris, and Zurich. They had two children, Giorgio and Lucia.
